Alexander Laveikin: “Flights must go on”

In Moscow memorial Museum of cosmonautics in full swing preparing for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s flight. Open exhibitions, meetings with foreign delegations, conducted educational activities in schools. Deputy Director of the Museum of science, pilot-cosmonaut A. I. Laveikin took the time to answer the questions of the correspondent of the Russian geographical society.

– In Russia, 2011 was declared the year of cosmonautics. Half a century since Yuri Gagarin’s flight, many have given our country in terms of space exploration. Should we expect the same from the next fifty years?

Depends on what kind of development is involved. There are manned and unmanned space exploration. Unmanned space exploration – satellites, navigation, natural resources, meteorology, Photography of the Earth and the Universe. Today all this is extremely in demand and popular, so the direction will develop by leaps and bounds. As for manned space flight – here the question is more complicated. Continue reading

New spaceships.

It is now solved a question of principle: who will be the host space for the next two decades. Half a century, when humanity is poked in the Earth’s vicinity, still not fully understanding why (except that to get ahead of a competitor), has ended. And money in space dumped a lot. The project “Apollo” with six successful expeditions to the moon cost the us Treasury $ 25 billion (in prices of the 70-ies of XX century). And each launch of the Shuttle – under $ 500 million.

The Soviet Union was worth 2.5 billion rubles was never carried out lunar program (and it is in those years when a good wage was considered to be 90 rubles per month). More than 16 billion rubles were thrown into the system “Energy – Buran” Soviet Shuttle flew only once.

Yeah, from the projects was giving. All of these filters, Velcro and scanners, developed for the space and will be useful on Earth… But now we are talking about strategy.

ISS – the day before yesterday

The same strategy that the space powers (Russia and the USA joined China. India. Japan and the EU ) now consider the money very well and meticulously thought through perspectives. Continue reading

According to the data sent to earth orbiting space telescope GALEX, astronomers have made the image of the Veil nebula in the ultraviolet range. The Veil nebula (W78, Sharpless 103), which is also known as the Loop nebula or nebula Fishing net, is a diffuse nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. Was opened on 5 September 1784 by astronomer William Herschel. Previously, astronomers believed that this huge and relatively faint supernova remnant that exploded about 5,000 to 8,000 years ago, is at a distance of about 2500 light years from Earth, however, studies that fulfilled the space telescope “Hubble”, showed that the nebula is much closer – at a distance of 1470 light years. However, it extends for a distance of about 90 light-years, taking in the sky region of 3 degrees. Astronomers have smashed the nebula into four parts: separation – nebula “witch’s broom” (NGC 6960). South-West side of the Pickering’s Triangle (NGC 6979), East side (NGC 6992), which represents the fibrous structure of the nebula and the North side (NGC 6995).

Astronomers have discovered in the nearby galaxy M95 supernova. The discovery was made on March 16, 2014, when astronomers, both professionals and Amateurs, noted a bright spot on the outskirts of a spiral galaxy with a jumper M95 (NGC 3351), which is at a distance of 38 million light-years away in the constellation of Leo.
